Photos: Herzog to the Hall

Congratulations to Whitey Herzog, who will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame today.  Herzog led the Royals to three consecutive division crowns from 1976-78 and is the franchise leader with 410 wins as a manager.  Whitey’s KC connection began as a player, first in the minors with the Kansas City Blues in 1952, then again in the Majors with the Kansas City A’s from 1958-60.

Coverage of today’s ceremony runs from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Central on MLB Network.  We’ll have our DVR up and running so we can catch the Royals game (12:05 in New York) and Whitey’s speech.

, Kansas City’s manager from 1975-1979, has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

Herzog led the Royals to three straight division titles from 1976 to 1978.  His 1977 club won 102 games, a Royals record.  Herzog’s 410 regular season wins are the most in club history.  He was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 2000.  Herzog went on to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series win in 1982 and National League pennants in 1985 and 1987.
In a separate Veterans Committee vote, Royals founder Ewing Kauffman fell just short of election.  Kauffman received 6 of 12 votes.  9 votes were needed for election.

Herzog is shown above congratulating 1977 Gold Glove winners Frank White and Al Cowens.
