Topps names Chris Getz to 2009 Major League Rookie All-Star Team

Royals infielder Chris Getz, acquired from the Chicago White Sox with infielder Josh Fields on November 6, has been named to the Topps Company’s 51st annual Major League Rookie All-Star Team for 2009.

Getz, a second baseman, was joined on the team by Giants’ first baseman Travis Ishikawa, White Sox’ third baseman Gordon Beckham, Rangers’ shortstop Elvis Andrus, Marlins’ outfielder Chris Coghlan, Pirates’ outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Orioles’ outfielder Nolan Reimold, Mets’ catcher Omir Santos, Braves’ pitcher Tommy Hanson and Phillies’ pitcher J.A. Happ.

The 27-year old Getz batted .261 for in 107 games for Chicago, collecting 18 doubles, scoring 49 runs and stealing 25 bases in 27 attempts.  The left-handed hitter ranked tied for first among AL rookies in multi-hit games (28), third in triples (4) and stolen bases, tied for fourth in doubles and fifth in walks (30), runs and hits (98).  Getz’ 92.6 stolen base percentage (25-for-27) led the league (min. 15 attempts).  Defensively, his seven errors were tied with Toronto’s Aaron Hill for the fewest among second baseman in the AL. 

The Topps’ Major League Rookie All-Star team was initiated in 1959.  The Rookie All-Stars will each have a trophy on their 2010 trading card in Topps Baseball, with Series One due out in late January.

Royals’ right-handed pitcher Brian Bannister and infielder Mike Aviles were honored on the team following the 2007 and 2008 seasons, respectively.
