The Royals announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Steven Shell and outfielder Brett Carroll to minor league contracts for the 2011 season. In addition, the Royals have re-signed right-handed pitchers Luis Mendoza and Julio Pimentel, catcher Cody Clark, and infielders Irving Falu, Mario Lisson and Jamie Romak to 2011 minor league contracts. The club plans to announce invitations to Major League Spring Training at a later date.
Shell, 27, pitched in the Majors with the Washington Nationals in 2008 and 2009, compiling a 2-2 record and two saves with a 2.45 ERA in 43 relief appearances. In 55.0 career innings, the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder allowed just 39 hits, walking 22 and striking out 46. Originally a third-round pick by the Angels in 2001 out of El Reno (Okla.) High, Shell pitched for Tacoma (AAA) in the Seattle organization in 2010, going 3-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 21 games (nine starts).
The 28-year-old Carroll has made appearances at the big league level with the Florida Marlins in each of the past four seasons, breaking camp with the club in both 2008 and 2009. The right-handed hitter and thrower is a career .205 hitter at the Major League level with 13 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI in 283 at bats. The Marlins’ 10th-round pick in 2004 out of Middle Tennessee State University spent a majority of 2010 with New Orleans (AAA), also playing in 32 games with the Marlins and hitting .197 with four doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. Carroll made his Major League debut on June 17, 2007 at Kauffman Stadium.
Mendoza, 27, was acquired by the Royals on April 2, 2010 from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. He opened the season in the Royals bullpen, going 0-1 with a 22.50 ERA in four relief stints before posting a 10-9 record with a 4.10 ERA in 24 games (22 starts) for Omaha (AAA).
Pimentel, 24, returned to the mound in June after missing the entire 2009 campaign with ligament damage in his right elbow. Originally acquired by the Royals from the Dodgers on July 25, 2006, Pimentel was 0-0 with a 4.00 ERA in seven games (six starts) for the Surprise Royals (R) this season.
Clark, 29, hit .255 with 13 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 25 RBI in 72 games for Omaha in 2010.
Falu, 27, batted .272 with 14 doubles, one home run, 46 RBI, 75 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 19 attempts for Omaha last season. The switch-hitter appeared for his native Puerto Rico in the Pan Am Qualifying Tournament in October.
Lisson, 26, missed the entire 2010 season with a right shoulder injury.
Romak, 25, split 2010 between Wilmington (A Advanced) and NW Arkansas (AA). Signed as a minor league free agent on January 16, 2010, Romak combined to hit .296 with 29 doubles, 13 home runs, 64 RBI and 64 runs scored in 127 games.
