Infielder Mike Aviles got the call Thursday that he would be joining the big league club for the final game of the series with the Minnesota Twins.
The 5-9, 195-pound 28-year-old will make his Major League debut Thursday after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Omaha. He’ll make the start at shortstop, batting ninth as our Royals look to snap their current 10-game skid.
Aviles, who the Royals acquired in the seventh round of the 2003 draft, has been tearing it up for the O-Royals this season, hitting .338 (72-for-213) with 21 doubles, six triples, 10 homers, 42 RBI and 42 runs scored in 50 games. He leaves the state of Nebraska leading the Pacific Coast League in extra-base hits (37) and total bases (135), RBI, second in hits and doubles, tied for second in triples, tied for third in runs and RBI. On defense, he has made 32 starts at second base and 18 starts at shortstop.
Some more on Aviles…As a non-roster invitee this Spring, he hit .419 (13-for-31) with two doubles, a triple, six RBI and seven runs scored in 18 games for the Royals in Surprise, Ariz. Last season, he was named the Royals Minor League Player of the Year, hitting .296 with 17 homers and 77 RBI for Omaha. In 2003, he was the Arizona Royals Player of the Year, an honor he followed up by taking home Wilmington Player of the Year in 2004.
MORE ROSTER MOVES: To bring Aviles up, the Royals optioned first baseman/DH Billy Butler, who was hitting .263 with one homer and 18 RBI in 53 games this season, to Omaha.
