Out of the three “All-Star” finalists representing the Royals, John Lair, who hails from Pittsburg, Kan., has been chosen by fans across the nation for his community service through Special Olympics. Lair will be honored during the pre-game ceremony at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis on July 14 on FOX.
Lair, program director for New Hope Services and a long-time Special Olympics coach, started a Special Olympics team in his hometown in 2001 that has grown to be the best in the state. He volunteers over 600 hours a year with Special Olympics and has coached three World Champion Special Olympians. A past recipient of the Kansas Volunteer of the Year award, Lair was selected by the Royals as a Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat honoree in 2007.
One winning “All-Star Among Us” will be featured in People the week of the All-Star Game.
