There are not too many days during the season when Alex Gordon’s name is not in the lineup but today is one of those days. Ned Yost told reporters at his afternoon press conference that Gordon is out because Alex’s wife Jamie just gave birth to a baby boy, who joins big brother Max. He noted he thought Gordon would be back in the lineup tomorrow. Congratulations to the Gordon family!
The skipper was also asked how he will use new addition, Jamey Carroll, along with Chris Getz, who was activated from the disabled list today. “We will kind of use a platoon situation but there will be days Jamey will play against certain right-handers. We will just go day-to-day. They are both solid players. They are not flashy but they do a lot of things that go unnoticed. They will move a runner or have a sacrifice. At the end of the day they will have done two or three things that you really need to do,” said Yost.
Carroll and Justin Maxwell both came from struggling teams to a team that is 18-5 since the All-Star break and is in playoff contention. Ned was asked how those guys feel about joining a winning team. “One. They were tremendously excited about the situation. Two. They were excited because they see how much fun we have. They see the style we play with and the energy and athleticism we have on the field. They are excited to be a part of it.”
New Royal Jamey Carroll met with the press in the Royals clubhouse today.
When asked about being a veteran player at age 39, Carroll joked, “When I was 38, no one said anything. I turned 39 and it’s an age issue.” He went on to say that he shaved today so he would not show his age.
Carroll has never been traded during a season, so this is all new to him. He said that his family is pumped up and he looks forward to having them here in Kansas City. He’s looking forward to getting out on the field, having success and just being who he is as a ballplayer.
The Royals announced today that they have acquired veteran infielder Jamey Carroll from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations or a Player to be Named later. He will be placed on the Royals’ 40-man roster and the team will announce a corresponding roster move tomorrow.
Carroll, 39, has been with the Twins the last two years. He’s batting .230 this season with six doubles, 20 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in 58 games this season. A right-handed hitter, Carroll is batting .325 with a .372 on-base percentage against left-handed pitching this year, and batting .295 against southpaws in his career. He’s a lifetime .274 hitter with 145 doubles, 27 triples and a .351 on-base percentage in 11 Major League seasons with the Expos/Nationals, Rockies, Indians, Dodgers and Twins.
