The Royals made a roster move before today’s game, claiming RHP Kanekoa Texeira off outright waivers from the Seattle Mariners. RHP Brad Thompson was designated for assignment in order to make room on the 40-man roster.
Texeira, 24, made 16 appearances for Seattle this year, going 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA in 18.2 innings. He was drafted by Chicago in the 22nd round in 2006. Texeira was signed by Dan Ontiveros, who is now a scouting supervisor with the Royals. Texeira’s slider was rated as the best in the Chicago system in 2007.
He was traded to the Yankees after the 2008 season along with Nick Swisher in a deal that involved current Royal Wilson Betemit going to the White Sox.
Texeira posted a 2.84 ERA in 101.1 innings in 2009 for New York’s Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder. Seattle acquired him from the Yankees in the 2009 Rule 5 Draft.
Thompson, 28, was 0-4 with a 6.41 ERA in 16 relief appearances for Kansas City.
The talk today centered on the new additions to the Kansas City Royals; right-handed pitcher Brad Thompson and left-handed pitcher Bruce Chen. Royals’ manager Trey Hillman is excited to see the new arms in the bullpen and stated he is looking for the right combination to get the baseball to closer Joakim Soria in the ninth inning. Hillman knows that the Royals record this season would be significantly improved had they seen better outings from their relievers.
With these additions, also came some losses from the Royals’ bullpen. The Royals released relief pitcher Juan Cruz and designated relief pitcher Luis Mendoza for assignment. Hillman cited that Cruz didn’t have his full strength on several occasions this spring, possibly from a lingering sore shoulder that bothered him last season. However, Hillman believes these moves show the Royals are dedicated to winning now and will not settle for giving away any victories.
Zack Greinke pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in his Spring Training debut as the Royals won 4-2 over Texas on Friday. Rick Ankiel hit a triple and added an outfield assist. Brad Thompson, Ankiel’s teammate in St. Louis, made his Kansas City debut in relief of Greinke. Adam Bostick and Roman Colon held Texas scoreless and Bryan Bullington worked the ninth for the save.
The Royals have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Brad Thompson on a minor league contract for the 2010 season.
The 27-year old Thompson has made 185 appearances (32 starts) for the St. Louis Cardinals over the past five seasons, posting a 21-17 record and a 4.36 ERA. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder was 2-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 2009 for the Cardinals in 32 games, including eight starts. Thompson had spent his entire professional career in the Cardinals organization. He was a 16th round selection in the 2002 Draft out of Dixie State College. Thompson debuted in 2005 and was named the Cardinals’ Rookie of the Year after going 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 40 relief appearances.
Thompson and his wife, Andrea, currently reside in Las Vegas, Nev. We welcome Brad to the club!
