Joe Gordon, the skipper of the 1969 Royals, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame today by the Veterans Committee for his accomplishments as a player. Gordon played from 1938-43 and 1946-50 for the Yankees and Indians. He won the 1942 AL MVP by batting .322 with 18 home runs and 103 RBI with the Yankees. Gordon missed the ’44 and ’45 seasons due to World War II. He returned to play five more seasons, the last four in Cleveland. Gordon finished with nine All-Star selections, 253 home runs, 975 RBI, and a .268 average.
Gordon went on to manage the Indians in 1958. He was involved in baseball’s only trade of managers in 1960 when the Indians dealt him to the Tigers for Jimmy_Dykes. Gordon started the 1961 season as the manager of the Kansas City Athletics. In 1969, he became the first manager of the Royals. He is the only person to manage both the Kansas City Athletics and the Kansas City Royals.
