Notes from Trey Hillman's pregame press conference: Hillman says he likes the way the pitchers are competing but they are having trouble locating pitches and that's been the problem. He is looking for the Royals starters to get ahead in the count more often, by throwing the first pitch for strike one...Also: He also says Esteban German is heating up and looking like the player Hillman was told about before he came to Kansas City. To back Hillman up, German hit a triple of Tiger flamethrower Joel Zumaya last night and is hitting .438 over his last 13 games. His average is up to a season high .250.

It's hard to stomach a loss like last night, but a long used baseball saying serves as the perfect remedy. It's just one loss. That's right, that's the beauty of baseball. We play again tonight..

The season is 162 games in 180 days. We may be down in the dumps after a tough loss, but you've never got long until the slate is wiped clean and a new game begins. Let's forget last night and go Around the Horn...

First
One thing that can always distract Around the Horn's mind is free stuff. And this week is packed with that. There are still six games left in this homestand and each one has some sort of promotion. In fact only seven of the remaining 34 home games don't have a promotion.

Two huge events are planned for this weekend. Girls Night Out was a huge event last season. Tickets were scarce, martinis were plentiful and blue turned to pink for a night. That's going to happen all over again in two days. Emerson Drive will play immediately after the Saturday game. If you'll recall, Emerson Drive sang the National Anthem on Opening Day and they are excited to be back in Kansas City and playing to a stadium full of fans. We are excited to have them back.

Tickets are still available for both events.

Also this week: Tomorrow is a special day-game version of College Night and Friday is a double play with Buck Night and Fireworks. Dan Quisenberry Bobbleheads accompany the Emerson Drive concert on Saturday and Sunday is an autograph afternoon.

Second
Of course, the can't miss promotion for this week is tonight. Powder blue T-shirts with Frank White's name and number will be given to the first 20,000 fans. This is your chance to show your Kansas City pride by sporting the baby blue with Frank's name on the back.

White's story is becoming a bit of a legend in Kansas City and he deserves it. He rose from Longview Community College in Lee's Summit to the Royals Baseball Academy to a Major League Star who had his number retired in 1995.

The K.C. kid was known for the spectacular defense he displayed on the Kauffman carpet. White won eight Gold Gloves (should have been at least nine), was named to five All-Star teams, chalked up one ALCS MVP and a Silver Slugger award.

White managed several of today's current team including Billy Butler and Alex Gordon while they played at Double-A Wichita (now Northwest Arkansas). And now the Royals Hall of Famer works on FSN Kansas City broadcasts, serving as a part-time game analyst and appearing on Royals Live.

FSN-KC produced a 30-minute feature on White which aired for the first time on the 4th of July. It has two more air dates:

Thursday, July 24 at 6 p.m.
Monday, July 28 at 8 p.m.

Short
Jimmy Gobble has been placed on the disabled list with a stiff lower back which has apparently been nagging him for sometime. Joel Peralta has been recalled to the Major League Club...Mike Aviles is continuing to bash the ball and leads all rookies with a .323 batting average...Tony Pena last night was the first Royals position player to pitch since Shane Halter on July 17, 1998 at Seattle. Pena pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out future Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez...Notes from Trey Hillman's pre-game press conference: Gobble will not undergo a full rehabilitation, and instead will report to Omaha to rest and begin throwing from a flat surface in a few days...Also from Hillman: He was glad to see his team did not give away outs and came back to score four runs at the end last night.

Third
The Royals will be getting some national TV exposure next homestand. The FOX network will broadcast the game on Aug. 2, which will cancel one of the previously scheduled FSN-KC broadcasts, which will be made up on September 18 against the Mariners. The Aug. 2 is a 2:55 start on Aug. 2 which is a change from the original start of 6:10. A 1:10 start has always been slated for Sept. 18.

One more reminder about a MLB scheduling oddity, tomorrow is a rare Wednesday day-game with a 1:10 start, to allow for the Tigers to head out of town a little earlier on getaway day.

Extra Innnings
The Royals are working on a number of things for Military Appreciation Day, which is August 2. Around the Horn would like to request some help from our faithful here at mlblogs.com. If you have pictures of loved ones overseas wearing Royals gear, you can send them to blog@royals.com and we might be able to use them for a presentation during that day's events. If not, Around the Horn is also working on a special post for that day and may post some of these photos right here. Please include the name of the person, hometown, where they are stationed and what branch they are in.

And this week, we'll welcome Emerson Drive back for a full-length concert after their gig singing the National Anthem on Opening Day.

The Royals are rollin' a bit after their first series win in Chi-town since 2003. And they are poised to take on the Tigers for three followed by a four-game set against the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. To gear up for this homestand, let's go Around the Horn...

First
It's been said by people smarter than us that pitching is the currency of baseball. And if so, the Royals just got a little richer. Power-arm Leo Nunez, the 175-pounder with mid 90s stuff, is off the Disabled List and back in the bullpen, shoring up one of the more solid parts of the Club. Nunez made five rehab appearances after being placed on the D.L. May 29th. In his final appearance on Friday for Double A Northwest Arkansas, he pitched two hitless innings, striking out two.

Nunez brings a 1.71 ERA to the pen, joining Ron Mahay's 1.78, Horacio Ramirez's 1.15, Ramon Ramirez's 3.06 and closer Joakim Soria's 1.43. The K.C. pen as a collective whole holds a 3.76 ERA in 296 and 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting only .237 against Royals relievers.

The other side of Nunez's activation is that Joel Peralta was optioned to Omaha. Manager Trey Hillman said that he was just the odd man out, someone who has options remaining. Hillman stressed in his pre-game meeting with the press that Peralta was impressive in his last outing and he's starting to look like the pitcher he heard about when he first came to Kansas City - the trusted man out of the pen who led all relievers with 87 and 2/3 innings in 2007 and ended the season with 3.80 ERA, the lowest total of his Major League career.

Second
If Around the Horn mentions Jose Guillen, it's usually because of his offensive numbers, but manager Trey Hillman was asked today if he thinks Guillen's defense is underrated. He said it probably is and shouldn't be.

Around the Horn checked the numbers. He's currently tied for seventh in the American League with seven outfield assists (the A.L. lead is 10 by Ben Francisco). Guillen picked up number seven after gunning down Chicago's A.J. Pierzynski yesterday in the eighth. Pierzynski would have tied the game but instead he was an easy out for catcher Miguel Olivo. Guillen's throw one-hopped Olivo and beat Pierzynski by several feet.

Now defense is hard to judge. And outfield assist numbers can be a jaded number. Mark Teahen was second in the A.L. with 17 last year, but has only four this season. Why? Because baserunners and coaches figured out they can't run as often. Guillen on the other hand has always had a reputation for having a rocket of an arm and he's still among the leaders.

Hillman also applauded Guillen's reads on fly balls (this video is from the Tampa series) saying the slugger probably takes fewer false steps than any outfielder on the team.

Short
Mike Aviles is riding a career high 10-game hitting streak in which he's batted .432...Billy Butler homered Friday and Saturday, the first time he'd ever homered in back-to-back games...Notes from Trey Hillman's pre-game press conference: Look for Leo Nunez to ease back into his bullpen role as an eighth inning guy. He'll probably be used in earlier innings at first...Also from Hillman: Horacio Ramirez is not available today unless absolutely necessary because he pitched on back-to-back days and threw multiple innings in both games.

Third
Lots of news on the television and promotions side. This homestand is packed with specials, starting with 20,000 powder blue Frank White tees to be given out tomorrow, Ink College Night on Wednesday, Girls Night Out on Thursday, Fireworks and Buck Night on Friday, Dan Quisenberry Bobbleheads and Emerson Drive playing on Saturday and finally the Sprint Fun Run and Autograph afternoon on Sunday.

The Royals announced earlier this month that the August 2 game versus the White Sox is being moved from a 6:10 start to a 2:55 game to accommodate national coverage on FOX. Because of the loss of a TV date, FSN Kansas City is adding September 18 versus Seattle. The game time for that game is 1:10, with Royals Live starting at 12:30.

Extra Innnings
The Royals are working on a number of things for Military Appreciation Day, which is August 2. Around the Horn would like to request some help from our faithful here at mlblogs.com.
Whether you count the All-Star break as the halfway point or you're technical about it and measure the year in 81 game halves, the season is past its halfway point.

The Royals have 96 games in the bag. Tonight is 97 and the start of a short three game trip to Chicago. Trey Hillman said it yesterday when he noted that we have a tough stretch ahead.

To look a little further at what's to come and where we've been, let's go Around the Horn...

First
General Manager Dayton Moore and manager Trey Hillman addressed the media yesterday before the team's workout at Kauffman. The biggest thing they stressed is more consistency from the bats and the arms. To get started off right, Zack Greinke will get the ball tonight. Greinke earned the No. 1 slot with consistent pitching. They want him pitching to both divisional foes, throwing tonight in Chicago and again on Wednesday in the last game of the series against Detroit.

He's been nasty to hitters, striking out 104 so far this season and becoming the first K.C. pitcher to record 100+ punch outs before the All-Star break since 1997. Greinke also holds a .188 batting average against when there are men in scoring position, which is second in the A.L.

Trey said that pitching coach Bob McClure and the starters worked throughout the All-Star break at the Stadium. Trey cited a reason for the streaks the team has rattled off - both good and bad - has been because of the pitching, specifically the starting rotation which holds a 31-39 record. Last season the starters were 28-39 through 96 games.

Consistency is the motto and there is improvement. The biggest difference between 2007 and 2008, however is that seven pitchers have started games this year. 13 pitchers started at least one game last season.

Second
The state of the position players was also addressed by General Manager Dayton Moore. He said the organization is looking for Billy Butler to continue to improve, Alex Gordon to become more consistent and Mark Teahen to build upon the improvements he's shown over the last month. Moore also mentioned David DeJesus and acknowledged the outfielder's continuing success.

DeJesus is among the elite in the game right now. He entered the break with a .460 batting average with men in scoring position, which leads the Majors and is 41 points higher than Rangers' All-Star Ian Kinsler who is second. In fact DeJesus' mark is the eighth best entering the All-Star break since 1974 when RISP became a stat. Among those higher than DeJesus at the Midsummer Classic, Tony Gwyn's .500 in 1997, Barry Bonds' .500 in 1990 and Rod Carew's .467 in 1975. Needless to say, DeJesus established a Royals record, topping Mike Sweeney's .438 in 2000 and Hal McRae's .427 in 1982.

It should be noted that John Buck is 10th in the Majors with a .361 RISP average, the highest catcher in the Majors.

And as we wrap position players, Jose Guillen has to be mentioned. He's had an outstanding season at the plate. So far: he's tied a single game RBI record with seven in June 7, eclipsed last year's RBI season high with 65 this year (tied for fourth in the A.L.), belted 13 homers (seven of which have given the Royals the lead) and he's ranked in several other offensive categories.

As a team, the Royals have four players at 10 or more home runs with another sitting on nine. In 2007, only two players hit 10 or more and four hit 10 or more in 2006.

Short
Dayton Moore mentioned that the team is always looking to improve itself through trades or signings but does not want to compromise the current core of young players for a few months of service time or even a year of service unless the team felt it absolutely necessary...The team hired Sports Psychologist Andrew Jacobs, who was introduced to the team before yesterday's workout...Leo Nunez was moved to Double-A Northwest Arkansas for rehab, because of Triple-A Omaha's All-Star break. He pitched two innings of relief last night, recording a pair of strikeouts.

Third
The Royals return home for seven games on Monday. Plenty of promotions are in the works for the home stand including Frank White powder blue T-shirts Dan Quisenberry bobbleheads an Emerson Drive concert and the return of Girl's Night Out.

Tonight marks the first of 28 straight games against opponents with winning records, 16 of which are at Kauffman. The combined record for the seven teams is 368-297 for a .553 winning percentage.

Hope you didn't miss the All-Star game coverage here from our man Swanee who was in New York on Monday and Tuesday for the festivities and in the dugout during the game.

After fighting a dead phone, a late night and an early flight, Royals Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting Mike Swanson (Swanee) is back in Kansas City. And we'll get to the pics he sent earlier today as soon as we can.

We hope you have all recovered from the late night. The game ended at 1:37 a.m. when Minnesota's Justin Morneau was called safe at home in the bottom of the 15th. Around the Horn took yesterday off... to recover. Hopefully you had the chance to as well.

Swanee didn't. He had to catch a flight back early yesterday morning. He wasn't even able to catch up and think about sending Around the Horn his photos until today, when his phone was fully charged. Unfortunately, it died right before the game started or shortly there after. Swanee's phone was useless well before he got back to his hotel in midtown Manhattan around 3 a.m.

But lucky for us, he had a seat worth remembering. He was in charge of providing players for FOX and ESPN Radio to interview.

He snapped this from his spot on the bench. You can see Baltimore's George Sherrill (52), Yankee captain Derek Jeter (2), Boston captain Jason Varitek (with the beard behind Sherrill) and All-Star Game MVP J.D. Drew (on the stairs between Jeter and Varitek) and Home Run Derby champ Morneau is standing with his back to Varitek (he's the only other standing in the dugout who's face is fully visible).

Around the Horn isn't sure, and Swanee didn't say, but we're pretty sure the knees, hands and hat in the foreground belong to Texas' Michael Young (who provided the game winning RBI with his sac fly).

49 Hall of Famers scattered across the field as a part of the opening ceremonies. One famous Royal stood at third, standing next to Wade Boggs. You may have seen George Brett telling the AL All-Stars before the game not to try to be heroes but to be winners.

Of course, the home team is closest to first, so Swanee snapped this pic from the dugout.

Royals' All Star- Joakim Soria stood along the first base line for the introductions. Soria was between the Angels' Joe Saunders and Detroit's Carlos Guillen.

Another sight Royals fans might be familiar with from the All-Star game, Yankee Stadium had a B2 Stealth Bomber flyover.

Swanee informed Around the Horn that it was the same crews that fly out of Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster, Mo. It's the same stealth crew that often fly over Kauffman Stadium on Opening Day and that flew over Bank One Ballpark in Arizona during Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, another game Swanee was at.

The B2 flyover was during the National Anthem, which was sung by Sheryl Crow.

Swanee's spot in the dugout didn't allow him to get very close and his camera phone could only zoom so far.

He did get a lot closer to a few other stars though, including Kenny Chesney (pictured at right). He said Kenny was in a conversation and Swanee ddin't want to bother him, but he wanted to give us an idea of who turned out for the big game in the Big Apple.

With all the talk about saying goodbye to one of baseball's great stadiums, Swanee thought it would be appropriate to include a picture of Babe Ruth's plaque in Monument Park.

It was afterall the final All-Star game in the House that Ruth built.

Like we've said at the end of each post, Swanee, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy All-Star schedule to provide us with a chance to see some of the inner workings of how this whole thing went down. We know you're still resting and recovering for the second half of the season. So enjoy.

Royals Director of Community Relations Ben Aken was also in New York for the game, as we mentioned. Ben snapped this photo of our All-Star Insider. That's Swanee (on the right) with Minnesota Twins Director of Baseball Communications Mike Herman hanging out in the Yankees/American League dugout after the Red Carpet Show and before the pre-game festivities started.

Both Ben, Swanee and of course Joakim, thank you so much for representing the Royals with class, pride and style in the Big Apple. All three of you already have Around the Horn's All-Star vote to go to St. Louis next year.

At least that's what Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting Mike Swanson (Swanee) keeps telling Around the Horn.

If you watched last night, the Home Run Derby was by all accounts, amazing. The Rangers' Josh Hamilton didn't get the memo that Yankee Stadium isn't scheduled for demolition until this off season and started working on that last night, launching a total of 35 homers into the stands (this is an 8-mintue video) with several into the 3rd deck and one off Bank of America sign on the back wall of the stadium. Minnesota's Justin Morneau edged him in the finals by a score of 5-3. The AL Central's other entrant was impressive too, Cleveland's Grady Sizemore didn't make it out of the first round. Swanee was in charge of the AL Derby contestants and his other guy, Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria hit three.

Swanee had good seats for the show, sitting behind Chicago's Joe Crede. That's Hamilton at the plate during his historic first round. He broke Bobby Abreu's 2005 record of 24 first rounder shots, with 28 last night.

Around the Horn is curious if Swanee's neck is okay from craning his neck to watch all the shots Hamilton and Morneau, both lefties, hit to right field (they combined for 57 bombs during the competition).

If you were curious, the longest homer in the Majors this season (according to Hit Tracker Online) is 485 feet by Adam Dunn just last week on July 10th. That is not an official measurement but the estimated true or actual distance the home run would have flown if it had traveled all the way back to the field level.

If you check that site out, you'll notice that John Buck owns the longest home run by standard distance at 478 feet, which is the same as true distance but factors out wind, temperature and altitude. Buck's April 9th shot is also second on Hit Tracker's charts for speed off bat, which estimates his homer came off the bat at 121.6 mph.

FOX was setting up and rolling out the red carpet for the parade.

The All-Star parade ran right past Radio City Music Hall. Swanee didn't say if he stopped to see a show.

He did see Royals Director of Community Relations Ben Aken who's in New York helping with some of the All-Star games charity work. In this picture he's standing off to the side of the Boys and Girls Club.

And he saw former Cubs' star Mark Grace interviewing a Hall of Famer you should all recognize. And since we were talking homers in Yankee Stadium, George Brett is a very fitting choice for Grace to talk to.

Brett hit 17 regular season and five postseason homers in the "House that Ruth Built" and holds a lifetime .311 average there.

Royals fans won't forget the "Pine Tar" Game or his homer in the 1980 playoffs.

And lastly, but definitely not least, Swanee saw the All-Star Joakim Soria with his wife, Karla.

Again today. Big thanks to Swanee and we here at Around the Horn who are still in Kansas City hope he's having a great time in New York.

He's on AL Clubhouse duty tonight for the game. You can be close to the action too without even being in the Big Apple. FOX will have complete coverage of the game tonight which starts at 7 p.m. CT.

Hopefully we can get an update and maybe some photos from him as the week goes by.

The Royals other All-Star, Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting Mike Swanson (Swanee) has already been plenty busy. But he's taking pictures with his phone (he apologizes for the quality) and keeping tabs on Soria for all of us back here in Kansas City.

This morning, the All-Stars had a 50-minute "assembly-line" media session. Swanee said the players were just lined up in a conference room and media made stops at each table.

Soria was conducting interviews with everybody who came by and in as many languages as he could speak (Around the Horn is pretty sure that's just two, English and his native tongue Spanish).

One note about his heritage, Soria is the only Mexican player on either All-Star roster. In fact there are only 15 Mexican players who have played in the Majors this season and just 103 to ever play in the Majors. In comparison, the Dominican Republic has fielded 115 players in 2008.

Soria is the most dominant Mexican pitcher of all-time (only pitchers with at least 10 appearances were considered). His current 2.09 ERA in 112 innings edges Cy Acosta, who held a 2.66 ERA over 186 innings from 1972-75. And his batting average against is a full 40 points lower than Jose Cecena who established a .213 average against in 22 games in 1988 (Acosta holds a .216 batting average against).

Swanee told Around the Horn that Soria was stationed between two popular stops, Carlos Quentin of the White Sox and the Yankees Mariano Rivera (he's the cause of the glare from the lights in the picture). Quentin is currently second in the American League in home runs (22) and RBI (70).

While Rivera, one of three players representing the host team, is considered one of the greatest closers of all-time. He's putting together another solid season this year, sixth in the A.L. in saves with 23 which happens to be one spot and two saves behind Soria who's 5th and tied a Royals pre-All-Star break record with 25 saves.

Home Run Derby Tonight
Swanee also reports that he's in charge of the American League Home Run Derby players. He sent Around the Horn a photo from their press conference. Representing the league with the DH, will be four non-DH's. Swanee should have an easy time with a pair of divisional opponents, Minnesota's Justin Morneau and Clevland's Grady Sizemore, in the mix. The A.L. will also send the Ranger's Josh Hamilton, Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria to the plate. The National League will have Houston's Lance Berkman, the Brewers' Ryan Braun, the Marlin's Dan Uggla and Philadelphia's Chase Utley vying for the title.

Swanee's American League guys are featured in the photo, going from left to right Hamilton (in red), Longoria, Morneau and Sizemore. Angel's slugger Vladimir Guerrero hit 17 homers last year in San Francisco to win it all. Around the Horn doesn't have a favorite, but is just pulling for the American League to keep the title. The Derby starts at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Around the Horn hopes to deliver more All-Star coverage throughout the week, keeping in touch with our inside man in New York. Swanee, thanks for the photos.

Big congratulations go out to Grud and a big thank you to team photographer Chris Vleisides.

Around the Horn purposely did not mention Grud today to hopefully lift the jinx. We'd like to think we had a little part to play in tonight's big moment for him. (kidding) But really, Grudzielanek's first hit of the night snapped a 0-for-7.

It happened again last night. Mark Teahen can motor around those bases. He has a pair of inside-the-park homers this season. Teahen's gallop around the base paths was the icing on the cake for a come-from-behind win over the Sox.

A lot of plays in baseball can be exciting. Around the Horn double plays are a favorite here, for obvious reasons. Triple plays are much rarer and maybe more exciting.

Around the Horn did a little informal Internet research today, scouring a few Internet message boards, random polls and listening to some talk radio and the consensus is in on baseball's most exciting play. To find out what we found, let's go Around the Horn...

First
The common theme for the most exciting play was quick action. Close tags, snap throws, quick thinking in tight games and late innings were present in almost every answer Around the Horn found. Teahen's journey last night provided a little of all of that.

During the eighth inning, with Jose Guillen on at second after doubling Mike Aviles home for the go-ahead run, Teahen laced a 3-2 pitch into the right-center gap that bounced to the wall. Guillen scored easily. Teahen got on his horse (we love that phrase!). He said he was looking for a triple. So did some of the White Sox fielders.

When Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski tagged Teahen on the forearm, it was just after the Royals' right fielder touched home. And the crowd exploded.

In a matter of five batters and almost no time, the Royals scored four runs and were set to win the game. After all, we have an All-Star named Joakim Soria to bring in for the ninth.

Teahen's inside-the-parker was his second this season and the second of his career. His first was May 27 when the Twins were in town. The last Royal hit a pair in a season was Brian McRae in 1992. Willie Wilson holds the Royals inside-the-park records with 13 during his career and five in 1979 alone. So Teahen has some running to do.

But what does he think about them?

To quote MLB.com: "They're starting to get kind of boring," Teahen deadpanned.

For some fun stats about inside-the-park homers, check out Baseball Almanac.

Second
Not to be overlooked in last night's eighth inning heroics is Jose Guillen. The Royals slugger had a hand in two of the runs the team scored. He has 22 go-ahead RBI which is first in the American League (tied with Texas' Josh Hamilton). San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez has 24 RBI to lead the Majors, with Guillen and Hamilton tied for second. Hamilton and Gonzalez are heading to New York next week.

His RBI-double was his 29th, which is fourth in the Majors and it came with two outs. Guillen has been exceptional with two outs, knocking in 29 RBI with two men down. That's third in the A.L. He's also tied for third in the League with 65 total RBI.

Short
The Royals have snagged two pitchers in the last few weeks off waivers with Robinson Tejeda already making a difference in the bullpen and now lefty Josh Newman being assigned to Omaha today after Colorado put him on waivers...Zack Grienke, who sits at 104 K's, is the 13th pitcher in Royals history to top 100 strikeouts before the All-Star break(he's 10th on the list and Dennis Leonard holds the record with 133 in 1977)...Notes from Trey Hillman's pre-game press conference: Hillman and his staff have already started evaluating the first half of the season. They had a three-hour meeting last Saturday in Tampa to begin the process...Mark Grudzielanek when 0-for-4 last, still leaving him two hits shy of 2,000. Around the Horn blames itself for jinxing him with yesterday's post. Our bad, Grud.

Third
Limited spots remain for the Royals charity golf tournament. It will be held on August 7 at The National in Parkville, Mo.

Two more games follow tonight for the "Hats Off" weekend. That also means two more games of relief support and one more night of discounted "relief tickets." Make it a point to get out here (if you can) and support your fellow Midwesterners in need.

Thanks for your help.

Questioning the Call
Around the Horn would like to ask you, what do you think is the most exciting play in baseball?
