Ned Yost media session: August 25, 2013
Royals skipper Ned Yost met with the media before today’s game against the Nationals. One of the topics was today’s starters, Ervin Santana and Dan Haren, who played together for the Angels last season. Yost was asked why the Royals wanted to acquire Santana from the Angels. “We always liked his stuff. We knew that he had a tremendous slider and was a tremendous competitor. We felt he had more productive years ahead of him. Of course he has come in and proved that to be true.” The manager went on to say, “I expected him to be really good (this year). When we made this deal the Angels pitching coach, Mike Butcher, told me ‘Look, you guys are going to get a heck of a pitcher’.”
So far this season Santana has proved that to be true by posting a 3.13 ERA and having 19 quality starts in 25 outings.
The manager was then asked if he had ever been around another pitcher he could compare Ervin’s demeanor to. “Yeah, Tom Glavine. Tommy was totally unflappable and so is Ervin. Smoltzy was more like James Shields, in that he pitched with a lot of fire and competitiveness but Ervin is a lot like Tommy in the fact he is steady as-you-go. He never changes his expression. He never gets amped up in situations. He is just a very solid and steady competitor. It is amazing to watch his composure and demeanor on the mound,” said Yost.
