Ned Yost media session: August 21, 2013
The Royals have 106 stolen bases on the season, which is most in the American League. Today at Ned Yost’s afternoon press conference the manager was asked how important stealing bases and baserunning in general is for this team. “It’s important. The more scoring opportunities we have, hopefully, the more runs we are going to score. It hasn’t worked out like that lately but you still have to put yourself in the best positions to score runs and take advantage of a big hit.”
Since returning from the disabled list on August 12th, Chris Getz has been hitting the ball well, to the tune of .364 batting average. The skipper explained this afternoon why he has inserted Getz in tonight’s leadoff role. “The reason you are seeing Getz at the top of the lineup today is because he has been swinging the bat very well. He has been working the count extremely well since he has been back. He is seeing pitches and doing everything you want a leadoff guy to do,” said Yost.
Mike Moustakas is returning to the lineup for only the second time since leaving the August 12 game with a tight left calf. Yost said his third baseman is probably still at 80-85% but thinks he should be able to play through the tightness.
