Ned Yost media session: August 10, 2013

Royals manager Ned Yost met with the media this afternoon prior to game three of a four-game set with the Red Sox.  Yost first stated the probable return of pitcher Wade Davis and catcher Salvador Perez as they both figure to rejoin the team for tomorrow’s day game.  Davis is scheduled to start on Monday against the Marlins.

Yost then discussed the importance of the trade deadline acquisition of outfielder Justin Maxwell, especially with Lorenzo Cain’s recent trip to the DL.  “It’s been huge to get another right-handed batter in there, and we knew there was a possibility of this happening and so we wanted to protect ourselves with another power right-handed bat on this team and it turned out to be a pretty good deal for us.”

Yost then went on to talk of the recent surge at the plate for shortstop Alcides Escobar.  “He’s been working on some mechanical issues, he’s staying more upright and his bat is staying for level through the zone.  He’s able to hit the ball harder on the line up the middle and to hit to right field which is his strength.  He’s been much more consistent in his mechanics right now.”

Yost concluded by giving praise to the fan support in last night’s come from behind victory.  “It was amazing last night, the atmosphere and the excitement of all the fans especially in the sixth inning.  You know generally you’re so focused on what’s happening in the game, you don’t hear what’s going on, but it was so loud and vibrant in the sixth inning that you stop and look around and everyone is standing, that’s a fun feeling.”

The Royals and the Red Sox meet for the sixth time this evening with Kansas City leading the season series 4-1.  With a win tonight the Royals would also claim their seventh straight series victory.
