Ned Yost media session: August 6, 2013
Tonight James Shields takes the mound against the Twins but at Ned Yost’s press conference, tomorrow night’s starter was a main topic of discussion. The Royals need a spot starter as Wade Davis is on the Family Emergency list following the passing of his step-brother. They have chosen to go with Danny Duffy, who has been rehabbing vigorously after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery in June, 2012. The skipper was asked why they decided to go with Duffy.
“We want to see where he is at. He has been throwing well in Triple A (Omaha). We thought it would be a good opportunity to gauge where he is in his comeback.” Yost went on to say, “He (Duffy) needed to get his arm healthy and strong again. Yeah, he had to learn how to command his pitches again but the most important thing for him was getting back on the mound, healthy. He has worked extremely hard through his rehab.”
Last night the Royals erupted for 13 runs, a feat they had accomplished one other time this season, April 5th at Philadelphia. Ned was asked about the teams’ mental approach at the plate. “Right now, for the most part, everyone feels good about themselves when they step in the box. Over the course of the season you have periods where you feel really good and periods where you don’t. The key for good ball clubs is having four or five guys going good at the same time. That is what we have done well lately.”
