Ned Yost media session: September 4

Today Ned Yost met with the media before the second game against the Texas Rangers. There were a few lineup changes with Eric Hosmer resting, Tony Abreu in the DH position, Billy Butler at first base and Jeff Francoeur back in right field. In yesterday’s Labor Day matinee, Abreu tied a career high with three RBI for the second-straight game. Since Abreu has arrived, he has hit in seven of his nine games, batting .322. Ned Yost said, “The whole object is to get him (Abreu) as many at bats and play him at as many positions as we can here throughout the last month. He is going to fit in the utility role for us, so we just pick his spots with him, but he is swinging the bat good right now. It gives us a chance to give Hos (Eric Hosmer) a day off against a tough lefty and still have some offense in the lineup.”

Right-handed reliever Jeremy Jeffress  is back in the bullpen after being recalled from Northwest Arkansas. “It gives us a little more depth, which is good at this time of the year. Especially when we are adjusting tomorrow (with a spot start from Everett Teaford). We have two guys we are trying to save back today, so it just gives us a little more depth.” He followed with, “This year I have liked what I have seen. I think he (Jeffress) is making great improvements. He’s much more consistent in the strike zone, which has always been something he has needed to work on. He is throwing strikes much more and at a much higher rate with all of his pitches, which is good. His stuff is excellent, it has just been a matter of command and execution and he has been much more consistent with that,” said Yost.
