Ned Yost media session: June 27

Today’s roster moves were the first topic of discussion when manager Ned Yost met with media inside his office this morning.  The Royals recalled left-handed pitcher Everett Teaford and outfielder Jason Bourgeois from Triple-A Omaha while optioning lefty Francisley Bueno to Omaha and designating catcher Humerto Quintero for assignment.  Both Teaford and Bourgeois are in the starting lineup for this afternoon’s game.  Yost said they needed another spot for Teaford on the roster and they would be facing a lot of left-handed pitchers in their upcoming games, therefore they wanted to add another right handed bat in Bourgeois.  Yost said the reason they sent Quintero out instead of Brayan Pena is because he (Pena) is under club control through next year, while Quintero is a free agent at the end of the season.  Yost also said Bueno did a very good job for the Royals while he was here and he wishes he could keep him, but with roster restrictions and the team’s needs they can’t.

The next topic involved the addition of Bourgeois and the Royals’ plans for him.  Yost said Bourgeois swings the bat very well against left-handed pitching and they needed that right handed bat.  He went on to say that it will be a bit of a platoon between Bourgeois and Jarrod Dyson although Dyson is better defensively and has more range.  What it means is centerfield will not be a strict platoon spot and Dyson will likely see more playing time, but Bourgeois will get a chance as well.  Depending on the situations and what is happening in the game will likely dictate what happens.

Lorenzo Cain will be making another start in Triple-A tonight on his rehab assignment to get back with the Royals.  Yost said he is still not ready and it will be a while before he is back in Kansas City.  He said he still has to get his strength back up and be ready to play nine innings every day.  Right now he is only playing six to seven innings per game.  Yost said once he is fully ready he will be back.
