Ned Yost media session: June 22

Manager Ned Yost met with the media before tonight’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The two topics of discussion were about catcher, Salvador Perez and pitcher, Felipe Paulino. Perez is back on the active roster after being on the 60-day disabled list due to surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Yost said, “He is a very intelligent young man. He plays with a lot of energy, a lot of life, really good behind the plate and can swing the bat. More than anything we like his energy. I’m glad he’s back and it’s time for him to play some up here again. He’s ready, he’s healthy and I’m glad to have him back.” Perez will not be able to catch every game, but he will be able to catch around three to four games a week. The Royals will be keeping both Humberto Quintero and Brayan Pena on the roster for now to have some depth in the catcher position. “Pena and Quintero both did a nice job in his absence, but it (three catchers) gives us a little extra depth behind the plate, right now,” said Yost.

Felipe Paulino has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and might be the fourth pitcher for the Royals to have Tommy John surgery this year.  “It has changed our plans for the rest of the year because we have counted real highly on getting him back after the rehab start. It is a big blow, but you have to move on,” said Yost. There are many pitchers going down with Tommy John surgeries this year. Yost said, “I don’t think I have ever been around a team where two guys have had to have Tommy John, let alone four.”
