Nebraska and KC teammates join Gordon to help Diamond Dawgs

On Saturday night, Gold Glove outfielder Alex Gordon and his wife Jamie hosted Playing for Pink Casino Night to benefit the Nebraska Diamond Dawgs baseball team and the American Cancer Society.

Two of the young players on the Diamond Dawgs have lost their mothers to cancer.  The entire team has rallied with a Playing for Pink motto- they wear pink jerseys with inspirational words on the back.  Alex and Jamie have become regular supporters of the Diamond Dawgs, with the fight against cancer a personal one as Alex’s mother is a breast cancer survivor.

Half of the proceeds from Saturday’s event will help the Diamond Dawgs reach their goal of competing in a tournament next summer in Cooperstown, New York, with the other half going to the American Cancer Society.

Attendees at the Lincoln event included: Royals Billy Butler, Jeff Francoeur, Luke Hochevar and hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, plus Nebraska alums and fellow MLB stars Joba Chamberlain, Brian Duensing and Tony Watson.

I met the Diamond Dawgs in Cooperstown last week. I am an umpire from Jacksonville, Florida, and I hope all of these boys do well in the future. If not for the Cooperstown Tournament, I would have never heard about the generosity of these Major League players and coach. Had they done something off the field, we surely would have heard all about it down here. Whenever the Royals are in Tampa, I will happily make the drive down to go see them play. Congratulations on allowing your players the time to Support events such as this, as well as signing players who understand the importance of giving back.
