Ned Yost media session: September 4

Before wrapping a three-game series vs. the Cleveland Indians with today’s 1:10 contest, Royals manager Ned Yost said there has been no final decision made on right-handed starter Felipe Paulino, who is scheduled to start tomorrow in Oakland. Paulino received an MRI on Friday after he was scratched from his scheduled appearance on Wednesday vs. Detroit due to back spasms.

“He [Paulino] passed his test yesterday,” Yost said. “Had some general soreness which was okay so we will see how he feels today and we’ll evaluate it tomorrow.”

Right fielder Jeff Francoeur and shortstop Alcides Escobar both have the day off for today’s game. Yost praised Francoeur for his diligence throughout the season and wanted to give him some rest for a change and also playing time for outfielder Mitch Maier. The Royals skipper touched on Escobar’s condition after the shortstop exited Friday’s contest due to a left ankle sprain. Yost said that Escobar is doing well and wanted to give him one more extra day to relax.

“Esky [Escobar] could probably play today but we’re going to give him one more day,” Yost said. “Two days off is going to be a like a month for him.”

Infielder Chris Getz filled in for Escobar at shortstop during Friday’s game and has been put into the role in yesterday and today’s contests as well. Yost complimented Getz saying that the second baseman has worked hard to help his throws from shortstop, which has an entirely different feel than from his customary second base spot.

The Royals will hit the road after today for a seven-game trip facing Oakland and Seattle starting tomorrow with a 3:07 (Central) Labor Day contest vs. the Athletics.
