Ned Yost media session: August 2
Prior to opening up a three game series vs. the Baltimore Orioles with tonight’s 7:10 contest, Royals manager Ned Yost explained to the media the decision to bring up lefty Everett Teaford after starting right-hander Kyle Davies was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a right shoulder impingement.
“We’ve been using our young guys (in the bullpen) a lot, we’re in August and an extra arm wouldn’t hurt us right now,” Yost said. “So we brought Teaford back to give us a little extra cushion down there in the pen.”
Yost commented on Triple-A Omaha’s second baseman Johnny Giavotella who holds a current .339 AVG with 72 RBI and a .391 OBP. The Royals skipper informed the media that bringing up Teaford was a better fit for now to help strengthen the bullpen.
“We looked at a bunch of different scenarios and the best was the bullpen for the strength of our team,” Yost said. “Gia’s [Giavotella] is going to be here. He’s coming, he’s done everything that he needs to do to get here. The time’s not right, we need to protect our pitching.”
Since adding infielder Yamaico Navarro and minor league pitcher Kendal Volz to the Royals roster in a Mike Aviles trade with the Boston Red Sox, Yost sees infielder Navarro filling the role as a utility player for the squad. Yost has confidence in Navarro to start him in the third base or second base position for playing time.
The Royals also showed their excitement to host the 2012 MLB All-Star Game set for Tuesday July 10, 2012 with the unveiling of the official logo today (above).
