Ned Yost media session: July 18

As the Royals prepared for a six-game homestand, manager Ned Yost spoke about holding regular left fielder Alex Gordon out of Monday’s lineup and spoke on the team’s confidence in young third basemen Mike Moustakas.

Yost said that Gordon experienced swelling after fouling a ball off of his foot in Sunday’s series finale at Minnesota. The skipper noted that Gordon was in a lot of pain when the club’s charter landed Sunday evening, but that he showed noticeable improvement when he arrived at Kauffman Stadium on Monday.

“He’s much better after a couple rounds of treatment this afternoon and I don’t anticipate him being out for much longer,” Yost explained.

Mitch Maier will make the start in left field on Monday evening and will hit in the leadoff spot. Yost described that the team is still figuring out who fits best at the top of the order. Chris Getz, who had been hitting first, now moves to the No. 9 slot.

When asked about his rookie third baseman, Yost emphasized that Moustakas comes to work focused every day and that as long as his attitude remains positive, results will soon follow despite his recent struggles.

“The first thing we do as a staff is we monitor these young kids – especially in times of adversity – to make sure that they’re not losing confidence in their abilities, that they continue to come out and work and continue to fight every single day,” Yost said. “[Moustakas] has done that to a great degree every single day. As long as he continues that, we know we can work through everything else.”

Yost went on to say that all his young players show up on a daily basis prepared to play the game. He said the coaching staff continues to give the players things to focus on, allowing the squad to continue improving.
