Ned Yost media session: June 1

Before Wednesday’s 3:10 series finale against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Royals manager Ned Yost spoke about his expectations for right-hander Felipe Paulino, who will be making his first start and second appearance in a Kansas City uniform.

Paulino was acquired from the Colorado Rockies on May 26. The 6-2, 270-pounder made his Royals debut in relief last Friday at Texas, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts. He has also seen time in the Majors mostly as a starter with the Houston Astros from 2007-2010.

“I saw dominant stuff,” Yost said. “He threw strikes with a real good fastball, a good two-seamer [and] a hard, tight slider.”

Yost said he expects Paulino to reasonably be able to throw around 75 pitches in today’s start, depending on how the innings play out.

“We’ll look at his pitches per inning. We want to get him built back up [as a starter],” Yost said. “He’s a big, strong guy. Somewhere between 55-75 ought to be a good base.”
