Ned Yost media session: May 31

Heading into Tuesday’s 7:10 contest against the Los Angeles Angels, Royals manager Ned Yost spoke about making a switch in the closer role, explaining why the move became necessary. Following yesterday’s loss, Yost announced that rookie Aaron Crow will now handle those duties, taking over for Joakim Soria.

Yost said that Crow was the logical choice to take over because of his makeup and track record in his young career.

“He’s got a lot of confidence in himself, he’s got great stuff and he’s had great success to this point,” Yost said. “He’s been the eighth inning guy and he moves up.”

The skipper said Soria will be used in situations where he can throw multiple innings. Yost explained that he wants his former closer to have an opportunity to throw more pitches to regain his form on the mound.

As far as the rest of the bullpen, Yost emphasized that he would like to see the starting rotation work later into games to give the relievers some rest. He noted that there is a concerted effort being made not to overwork his young relief staff.
