Ned Yost media session: Roster moves discussed

Before Thursday’s 7:10 series finale against the Texas Rangers, manager Ned Yost explained both roster moves that the Royals made on Thursday. He said the moves were necessary after using the bullpen for a combined 18.0 innings over the last three games.

Earlier in the day, the Royals announced that the club has recalled righthanded reliever Greg Holland and optioned reserve outfielder Jarrod Dyson to Triple-A Omaha. Holland, who will wear No. 56, made 13 relief appearances for the Storm Chasers, going 2-0 with 2 saves and a 2.08 ERA. Over 21.2 innings pitched, he registered 27 strikeouts and issued only 11 walks.

Holland appeared in 15 games for the Royals over the final two months last season, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings. He allowed 23 hits and 14 earned runs to go along with 23 strikeouts.

Dyson was used primarily as a pinch-runner and stole 9 bases although he only received 24 at-bats. Yost said that the move was necessary because of recent stress on the bullpen and the need for Dyson to receive regular playing time.

“We needed 13 pitchers,” Yost said. “We had an extra outfielder in Mitch Maier and we had options. [Dyson] needed to play a little bit. He needed to get down and get some at-bats.”

Also, Kansas City reinstated righthanded reliever Robinson Tejeda from the 15-day disabled list and optioned reliever Jeremy Jeffress to Omaha. The club will use Jeffress as a starter at the minor league level.

“We’re going to send him down to start,” Yost said. “That will give him an opportunity to get lengthened out and use all his pitches. This will give him an opportunity to get some innings under his belt.”

Following tonight’s contest, the Royals will host the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-game interleague series beginning at 7:10 on Friday. Saturday and Sunday’s games will begin at 1:10.
