Royals to place Bruce Chen on 15-day D.L. tomorrow, recall Vin Mazzaro

The Royals have announced today that the club will place left-handed pitcher Bruce Chen on the 15-day Disabled List tomorrow, retroactive to May 6, with a left lat strain and recall  right-handed pitcher Vin Mazzaro from Omaha.  Mazzaro, who will wear #32, will start tomorrow night for the Royals against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Mazzaro (muh-ZAIR-oh), 24, was 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA in five starts for the Omaha Storm Chasers.  The 6-foot-2 right-hander has allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 31 hits in 25.1 innings, walking 13 and striking out 27.  Mazzaro was acquired by the Royals from Oakland with minor league pitcher Justin Marks on November 10, 2010 in exchange for outfielder David DeJesus.  A New Jersey native, Mazzaro is 10-17 with a 4.72 ERA in 41 career Major League appearances, including 35 starts, for the Oakland A’s in 2009 and 2010. 

Chen was 4-1 with a 3.59 ERA in seven starts for the Royals.  He will be eligible for reinstatement from the D.L. on May 21.
