Ned Yost media session: May 1
Heading into Sunday’s 1:10 series finale with the Minnesota Twins, Royals manager Ned Yost spoke about the transformation he has seen in the roster since taking over in May 2010. He said that his current squad features talent and a positive mentality that is translating into wins.
“A winning mentality is one where each player on your 25-man roster goes out and gives their best effort every single day,” Yost said. “That’s what a winner does.”
Luke Hochevar will make his seventh start of the season for the Royals on Sunday. Yost pointed out that he has seen steady improvement from Hochevar since taking over last season, and explained that his big right-hander features the kind of stuff that allows him to pitch out of trouble.
Yost praised the continued success of rookie reliever Aaron Crow, saying that he is most impressed with Crow’s 97 miles per hour fastball and above average slider. Yost envisions Crow getting stronger in the future as he continues to develop a curveball and changeup.
The skipper also noted that he will keep his regular 5-man rotation through June 20th. He said that each pitcher will have an extra day four times between now and then.
