Ned Yost media session: April 21

Before wrapping up the four game series vs. the Cleveland Indians with tonight’s 7:10 game at Kauffman Stadium, Royals manager Ned Yost shared with the media the decision to bring in rookie right-hander Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers. Yost’s choice to bring in Coleman was to help stabilize the bullpen and balance out the workload for fellow relievers like Aaron Crow, Blake Wood, Tim Collins, and Jeremy Jeffress. The Royals manager admires Coleman’s aggressiveness and ability to command the ball, along with his excellent Triple-A numbers and Spring Training record. Yost remarked about the advantages of having an excellent farm system foundation. With a group of good arms in the minors, it gives the team options to make changes if need be and provide opportunities.

When asked a question regarding Kila Ka’aihue in the Royal’s lineup and possibly turning the corner in last night’s game (2-for-3 with a walk), Yost replied by saying that he doesn’t judge on just one game but admires Ka’aihue’s approach, a successful Spring Training, and diligent work ethic. Patience and opportunity are the key factors in producing quality players.

The Royals will enter the series finale tonight with a 1-2 record vs. the Indians and an 11-7 record on the season. The skipper complimented his squad’s hitting skills, finding ways to score runs, playing consistent baseball, and executing nice defensive plays. Yost’s acknowledges various situations in the Royals vs. Indians series have been a bit of a struggle such as stranding runners in scoring positions and a shaky bullpen at times, but the Royals continue to focus on playing impressive baseball on a day-to-day basis.
