Royals and outfielder Jeff Francoeur agree to terms on a one-year contract

The Kansas City Royals have announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with outfielder Jeff Francoeur.  The deal includes a mutual option for the 2012 season and is pending a physical.  Consistent with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 26-year-old Francoeur split the 2010 campaign between the New York Mets and A.L. Champion Texas Rangers.  The 6-foot-5, 220-pound outfielder combined to hit .249 with 13 home runs and 65 RBI and scored 52 runs in 139 games.  A career .268 hitter with 101 home runs and 465 RBI, Francoeur made his Major League debut as a 21-year-old with the Braves in 2005.  He was named to the Baseball America, Topps and Baseball Digest All-Rookie Team after batting .300 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 70 games.  The right-handed hitting and throwing Francoeur is a career .299 hitter with a .481 slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers.

Defensively, Francoeur was honored with the 2007 National League Rawlings Gold Glove after playing in all 162 games and tying for the Major League lead with 19 outfield assists.  His 81 career outfield assists since the beginning of the 2005 season lead all Major League outfielders, 17 more than second-place Alfonso Soriano.

Originally a first round selection of the Atlanta Braves (23rd overall) in the 2002 June Free Agent Draft, Francoeur was acquired by the New York Mets on July 10, 2009 for outfielder Ryan Church.  He was then acquired by the Texas Rangers on August 31, 2010 in exchange for current Royals infielder Joaquin Arias.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., Francoeur and his wife, Catie, now reside in Duluth, Ga.
