Guillen designated for assignment, Humber contract selected

The Kansas City Royals today designated outfielder/DH Jose Guillen for assignment and selected the contract of righthanded pitcher Philip Humber from Omaha.  The designation gives the Royals 10 days to trade, release or outright Guillen while opening a 40-man roster spot that is taken by the selection of Humber.

Guillen, 34, was hitting .255 in 106 games for the Royals with 16 home runs and 62 RBI.  Kansas City was his ninth Major League stop in a career that began in 1997 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He signed a three-year free agent contract with the Royals prior to the 2008 season.

Humber, 27, was 5-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) for AAA Omaha, with 20 walks and 80 strikeouts in 118.2 innings.  Some of his best work of the year came in the last week when he earned PCL Pitcher of the Week honors by tossing a complete game shutout at Nashville last Friday, allowing only four hits while fanning seven.  A native of Nacogdoches, TX, Humber was the third overall selection in the 2004 First Year Player Draft by the New York Mets.  He played his collegiate baseball at Rice University, where he was part of the 2003 National Championship club.  He will be in Seattle for Friday’s game and wear #59.
