Remembering Buddy Blattner
Buddy Blattner, the original play-by-play voice of the Royals, passed away this morning in Chesterfield, Mo., at the age of 89. Blattner was a second baseman for the Cardinals, Giants and Phillies in the ’40s. He teamed with Denny Matthews from 1969 to 1975. He came to Kansas City after seven years as the radio voice of the Los Angeles/California Angels. He began his broadcasting duties with the St. Louis Browns and St. Louis Cardinals. He was also a table tennis champion, earning induction into the U.S. Table Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 1979.
