Teahen named Royals nominee for Clemente Award
Mark Teahen is the Royals nominee for the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. He is one of 30 Major League Club nominees for the national Clemente Award, which is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines exceptional performance on the baseball field with devoted work in the community. Fans are encouraged to participate in the selection of the national winner. From September 2 through October 4, 2009, fans can log on to www.chevy.com/clemente and vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. One lucky fan will win a trip to game three of the World Series where they will meet the award winner, the Clemente family and participate in the Clemente Award presentation!
Teahen will be recognized in a pregame ceremony prior to the 7:10 p.m. game against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, September 8. He is involved in a number of outreach efforts in the Kansas City area, including the Challenger Division of Little League Baseball. The local Challenger Division, which is administered through the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, removes barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field.
Since becoming the local Challenger spokesman in October 2006, Teahen has been involved in a number of events to help bring funds and visibility to the program. For the past two years, he has hosted his own offseason fundraiser – “Challenge Your Fashion.” The benefit has raised more than $275,000 and is now a signature fundraising event for the local Challenger program. Plans are already underway for “Challenge Your Fashion” to return in January 2010.
Congratulations to Mark on his nomination for the Clemente Award!
