Zack Greinke named A.L. Player of the Week (again!)

has been named the American League Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The 25-year-old went 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and a Major League-leading 20 strikeouts for the week.

He fanned 15 batters on Tuesday, besting Mark Gubicza’s club record from 1988.  Greinke’s 10th ‘K’ was the 700th of this career.  It marked the eighth time in his career that he has reached 10 or more strikeouts in a game.

Greinke’s encore performance on Sunday was equally impressive.  He became the first Royal since Gubicza in 1995 to record a one-hitter as he limited the Mariners to a walk and a single, both in the second inning.  Greinke followed that by retiring 22 straight batters as he joined Vida Blue, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez as the only pitchers since 1900 to have a 15-strikeout game followed by a one-hitter.

Congratulations to Zack on another great achievement!
