Royals sign Myers, Dwyer

The Royals today announced they have reached agreements with third-round draft choice Wil Myers (catcher) and fourth-round selection Chris Dwyer (lefthanded pitcher).

The Royals selected Myers from Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC, with the 91st overall pick.   The 6’3″, 185 lb. receiver from Thomasville, NC, batted .532 with 14 home runs and 41 RBI as a senior.  A right-handed hitter, Myers was listed as the number two “Best Pure Hitter” among high school players by Baseball America in the publication’s draft preview.  Myers helped his team win the 2008 North Carolina 3-A State Championship.

Kansas City drafted Dwyer, a 6’3″, 210 lb. southpaw, out of Clemson University with the 112th overall selection.  Dwyer was the first eligible freshman selected from a four-year college since the institution of the draft in 1965.  A native of Swampscott, MA, Dwyer made 17 starts for the Tigers in 2009, finishing 5-6 with a 4.92 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 86.0 innings.  Dwyer finished his prep career with a 24-1 mark, including 7-0 with a 0.07 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 41.0 innings in his junior year.  He was 38-2 in four years as the starting quarterback for his high school football team, earning Boston Globe Player of the Year honors as a junior.

We welcome Wil and Chris to the organization and look forward to tracking their progress in the coming years!
