Luke Hudson retires

Today we recognize an all-around good guy, Luke Hudson, who announced his retirement on Thursday. Hudson made the Royals in 2006 after signing as a minor league free agent in March. He struggled early in 2006 before regaining his form while with Omaha. Hudson returned to Kansas City and became the Royals Pitcher of the Month in July and August, finishing his season with a 7-6 mark.

Our favorite Luke Hudson memory is from September 4, 2006, which happened to be Star Wars Night at “The K.” The force was with Luke as he fanned 10 New York Yankees in front of a large crowd. Luke is one of just 27 Royals pitchers to have at least one game with 10 strikeouts.

Hudson pitched in just one Major League game after 2006 as he continued to have problems with his right shoulder. He hoped to return in 2009, but the shoulder injury lingered.

Luke became a fan favorite in his time with the Royals…he took part in community activities including Operation Blessing, Royals Caravan, and Royals FanFest. We’ll miss Luke and we wish him the best in his future endeavors!
