April 2009

Teahen, Greinke named Royals Player, Pitcher of Month

The Royals just ended April in first place with a 12-10 record.  Mark Teahen is your Royals Player of the Month for April.  Teahen batted .300 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI on the month.  He started at three defensive positions: second base, third base, and right field.

Your Royals Pitcher of the Month is Zack Greinke, by a unanimous selection.  Greinke’s numbers were mind-boggling…5-0 (he is the first Royal to win 5 games in April), 0.50 ERA (best in the majors), 44 strikeouts (an April Royals record and best in the majors)…the list goes on and on.

Congratulations to Mark and Zack on their awards!

Buck triples twice, drives in five

buck triple_7041.jpgJohn Buck had a big day for the Royals as he tied a club record with two triples!  It was just the second time that a Royals catcher had tripled twice in a game, and the first since Darrell Porter in 1978!  The Royals also turned six double plays, tying a franchise mark!

Kansas City now moves on to play Minnesota at the Metrodome.  It’s a quick road trip as the Royals are back in KC on Monday to face the White Sox.  Get your tickets today!

Trey Hillman Pre-Game Media Session

Doug Waechter Status

According to Manager Trey Hillman, Pitcher Doug Waechter is not on schedule to return in the near future.  He is going to need work first,  more sessions in the pen, and more then likely some minor league rehab with live hitters.  They are just waiting on his elbow to feel better.

He’s working on it

Manager Hillman was asked about Kyle Farnsworth and how he looks out there on the mound.  Hillman said, “He looks ok”.  He went on to say the coaches have really been working with Farnsworth on his stride direction hoping to tighten up his delivery.  That in-turn will help him locate much more frequently.

Who can we thank for this

Hillman was asked who we can thank for Mike Jacobs’ recent patience at the plate.  He said, “Seitzer of Course,” referring to Royals’ batting coach Kevin Seitzer.  He has made many of our hitters more balanced and patient at the plate over the course of spring training and the early part of the season.  He does not panic, ever, and he has done a great job here for us, say’s Manager Trey Hillman.

Joakim Soria not going to the DL as of now, but there is no target date for his return.  Being unable to throw long toss because of the weather has made it somewhat difficult for Soria to get into a rhythm with regards to rehab.

Trey Hillman Pregame Media Session

Trey Autographs.jpgOn last night’s starter Gil Meche:

Hillman said Meche is okay but stiff in his right lower back.  Tests were done and hopefully Meche is on for his next start.

Trey noted that “Gil is the kind of guy who doesn’t want to give up the ball, he wants to pitch.”

On Pitching:

Hillman is encouraged about the pitching, and he notes that it takes good starting pitching to win.

On Zack Greinke:

A reporter asked if Hillman was worried with all the eyes on Zack.

Trey said no, because the way Zack is wired, he will do the best he can. Hillman noted that Zack is black and white in his preparation, and doesn’t care about fluff.  Zack just wants to do his craft and is a student of the game.

Hillman talked about Zack’s great memory with opposing hitters.  Zack once told Trey last year what he did to an opposing hitter while in the minor leagues.

On Bob McClure:

Hillman described his pitching coach as exceptional. McClure can relate to most every pitcher because he has been there.

On Joakim Soria:

Hillman said that Joakim feels pretty good.  He might go out and play catch today, and the Royals hope to have him back in the next couple of days.  Soria is still day to day.

Trey Hillman Pregame Media Session

On Jose Guillen, who hit two home runs on Monday

Guillen says his timing is there.  Hillman disagreed with him on his first game back, but believes he has his timing now.  He needs to just swing at good pitches

On Soria and Waechter injury updates

There is no time table on a return for Joakim Soria or Doug Waechter.  Waechter threw a bullpen session today without pain.

On Greinke, the SI cover, and media attention

Hillman noted that Zack is a special pitcher (and admitted that special is an understatement).

Zack does not get caught up in the hype of the SI cover, but Hillman believes it is great for Greinke and for Royals.

Hillman mentioned that Zack has a lot of personal strength and that his teammates and coaches love working with Zack.  He noted that pitching coach Bob McClure and catcher Miguel Olivo have been vital in Zack’s development.

Hillman is hopeful that the national attention of Zack on the Sports Illustrated cover will bring more people out to the game tomorrow night (Wednesday) when Greinke makes the start.  He also mentioned what the attention can do for the team.

“We have the desire…we can be the team we want to be for the Kansas City community and build our fan base outside of the Kansas City area as well.”
