Weekend Wrap…

Butler_dayton_july_award Lots to catch up on from this weekend…

First, congrats to Billy Butler for his A.L. Rookie of the Month honor, which he received the award for on Sunday.Even though Butler took home the honor for his July stats, we waited until MLB sent the award and the Royals were back in town before recognizing the 21-year-old on the field. Next up in Royals rookies to receive A.L. Rookie of the Month awards: Brian Bannister. He won for August (and, before that, June!) and, hopefully, we can squeeze in another on-field rookie award ceremony for him before the season ends.

So, on the field this weekend, things didn’t go exactly as planned. But, off the field, we couldn’t have asked for better results with a couple of our biggest events of the season….

The “Family Photo at Home Plate” event welcomed 58 families and, even more exciting, amazing weather to Kauffman Stadium on Saturday. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., photographer David Riffel snapped photo after photo of die-hard Royals fans standing at home plate. We had a family who proclaimed they disowned Yankee fans. We had families who said they have been “True and Blue” for the Royals for decades. And, we even had one guy who thought home plate at Kauffman Stadium was the perfect place to pop the question…luckily, his girlfriend-turned-fiancé agreed and said yes! Jose_stageCongrats to the newly engaged Royals fans, Brandon and Jessica! And, thanks to all the families and volunteers who came out for the event, which raised $15,000 for the local chapter of The Dream Factory.

Friday night it was fiesta time at The K with the Royals first “Viva Los Royals” celebration. The concert had the crowd dancing, while the authentic Mexican food provided a great twist to the normal ballpark menu. Players_2Now, for those of us who aren’t too fluent in Spanish, players Joakim Soria , Jorge De La Rosa, Odalis Perez and Leo Nunez, as well as first base coach Luis Silverio did leave us guessing as to the messages they gave the crowd, which they greeted before taking the field.

Viva_shirt_2Also, if you didn’t get your “Viva Los Royals” T-shirt, no worries – we’ll be selling them in the team stores for the remainder of the season.

Alright, time to stop the skid – Minnesota is in town tonight for the first of three games. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. and tickets are still available. Also, don’t forget: tomorrow we are honoring our local heroes with “Salute to Uniformed Heroes” night at Kauffman – big pre-game ceremony, static displays in the parking lot, parade of flags around the field and a HUGE post-game fireworks show! Tickets are still available for that game as well with all military, police, fire and emergency personnel receiving free best available ticket for the game. Those tickets are available (with a proper I.D.) at all the Kauffman Stadium ticket windows. Hope to see you there…
