Royals Roster Moves

It’s September, which means a flurry of roster moves around the Major Leagues. Here’s a brief look at what moves the Royals made so far…

On Friday, Aug. 31, before September call ups even began, the Royals decided to recall Mike Sweeney from his rehab assignment and reinstate him from the 60-day D.L. before the second game of the doubleheader. To make room for Sweeney on the roster, the Royals optioned right-handed pitcher Kyle Davies to Wichita and transferred right-hander John Thomson from the 15-day to the 60-day D.L. After breaking up Scott Baker’s no-hitter with a single in the ninth inning Friday, Sweeney went 2-for-5 with a double as DH on Saturday and then 1-for-5 in the same role on Sunday.

The next set of moves came Monday, when the Royals reinstated Mark Teahen from the 15-day D.L. and recalled Davies and fellow right-hander Leo Nunez from Wichita. All three were in uniform for last night’s 8-1 win over the Rangers. Teahen started in right field, went 3-for-5, walked, scored a run and had an RBI – glad to have him back from the D.L., too!

Today, Kansas City recalled RHP and 2006 first overall draft selection Luke Hochevar as well as first baseman Justin Huber. The Royals purchased the contracts of catcher Paul Phillips and first baseman Craig Brazell. All four come from the Triple-A Omaha roster and will be in uniform for tonight’s game. Although a starter in the minors, Hochevar will work out of the bullpen at the Major League level, according to GM Dayton Moore, who just participated in an online chat with Royals fans.
