Royals Off Day Notes

The Royals are enjoying a rare off day in Kansas City today, following a heartbreaking 11-inning 5-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians Sunday. The team is back in action at Kauffman Tuesday for a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers. Here are some Royals notes to get you through the day…

On the Mound: The pitching match ups for the series against Detroit were announced yesterday. D20_2724

  • Tuesday – LHP Nate Robertson (7-10, 4.80) vs. RHP Brian Bannister (10-7, 3.28)
  • Wednesday – LHP Andrew Miller (5-4, 4.97) vs. RHP Zack Greinke (5-5, 4.25)
  • Thursday – RHP Jeremy Bonderman (10-7, 4.87) vs. RHP Kyle Davies (1-3, 6.10)

Dayton Signs, Too: Royals General Manager Dayton Moore did an impromptu autograph session Sunday. Needing to talk with a few of his players, Dayton joined the six Royals players, including closer Joakim Soria (seen here), in the D20_2766_1Pizza Hut Autograph Afternoon before the game yesterday.

Going Looonnnggg…: The Long Ball Haulers put on a show before the Royals-Indians series finale, launching ball after ball over the Kauffman Stadium outfield wall. The four players took turns hitting homers into the fountains, the bullpens and even up by the SUV that sits behind the left-field wall. Fans were planted in their seats early to catch the slow-pitch softball slugfest…and, apparently, several of the Royals players also couldn’t help but come out of the clubhouse and admire the Long Ball Haulers going the distance in our ballpark.D20_2861

“Family Photo at Home Plate” Reminder: The deadline to register your family for “Family Photo at Home Plate” is this Friday, Aug. 31. As of this morning, there are 11 spots available, so get your family registered today. Details and the online registration form can be found here on

Buckner in the Majors: Another rookie named Billy recently made his Major League debut for the Royals. Right-handed pitcher Billy Buckner pitched five innings of one-run ball on Saturday against Cleveland, striking out one while allowing seven hits and two walks to the 22 batters he faced. As of now, Buckner, who held a starter’s role in the minor leagues, is pitching out of the bullpen.

0828_2 Buck T-Shirt: Tickets are still available for every game this homestand including Tuesday, which is a T-Shirt Tuesday at Kauffman. The first 20,000 fans will collect a John Buck T-shirt courtesy of Sprint Wireless. The distribution will run the same as always: fans get XL-sized shirts when they enter the gate and, for those who want a smaller size, we’ll have medium-sized shirts available at two exchange tables placed at Gates A and B. After this Tuesday, there is only one more T-Shirt Tuesday promotion this season – Tuesday, Sept. 18.
