Denny Shares Hall of Fame Experience
While most Royals fans were watching or listening as the club took on A.L. Central foe Chicago last night, a select few had the pleasure of listening to the “Voice of the Royals” in person.
Denny Matthews, fresh off his visit to Cooperstown, N.Y., retold stories of his Hall of Fame Induction Weekend experience and shared some of his favorite Royals memories during a special invitation-only event held at the beautiful World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial on Tuesday evening. The gathering was sponsored by the Royals Radio Network to thank some of the big network sponsors, including State Farm Insurance, for their continued support of Royals Baseball.
Denny was joined on stage by local author Matt Fulks, who collaborated with the longtime broadcaster on the book Tales from the Royals Dugout. The two discussed some of Denny’s favorite personalities – including former manager Whitey Herzog, pitcher Doug Bird and slugger “Big John” Mayberry – that he has encountered during his 39 years as Royals broadcaster, as well as some of his newest acquaintances – namely legends Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax – that he got to know during his recent visit to upstate New York.
Be sure to turn the radio dial to a Royals Radio Network affiliate as Denny heads back to the broadcast booth beginning on Friday when the Royals take on the Cleveland Indians. You never know what great stories he may share over the airwaves…
