Royals Sign Moustakas

Here’s the Official Release from Media Relations:

Kansas City, MO (August 15, 2007) – The Kansas City Royals (Wednesday) announced they have reached a last-minute agreement with first round draft choice Mike Moustakas, the second overall selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are obviously ecstatic that we were able to close this deal tonight,” said Dayton Moore, Royals’ Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. “I am extremely proud of Deric Ladnier and his staff for the work they’ve done during the arduous process of contract negotiations. This is a talented young man and now it’s time to put the business end of this behind us, get him on the field and begin his professional career.”

A shortstop from Chatsworth (CA) High School, the 18-year-old Moustakas is a left-handed hitter who batted .577 during his senior season with a California-state record 24 home runs and 52 RBI, leading the Chancellors to the Los Angeles City Section Championship. The Baseball America High School Player of the Year hit 50 career high school homers, also a state record. D20_5766_2

A two-time Los Angeles City Section Player of the Year, the 6-0, 195 lb. Moustakas batted .427 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI during his junior season, nearly mirroring his sophomore numbers of .482, with 12 homers and 51 RBI.

Welcome to the Royals organization, Moustakas!

Moustakas has a bright future. I look forward to seeing Butler, Gordon, & Moustakas on the same field.

I like the young squad the Royals have. The pieces seem to be coming in place for the Royals to start looking to contend.
