Lineups: Cortez Contract Purchased

David Eckstein struck out on three pitches…to open the game. Using their voices, Royals fans began to emerge from the sea of red. A single-single-foul out-walk-bases loaded situation later and the roar from the red was released.

Then, Brian Bannister struck out Juan Encarnacion.

The BLUE took over for the rest of the night as the Royals used a five-run first inning to seal the deal and complete a near shutout, 8-1, over St. Louis last night. Tonight, we turn to Odalis Perez (3-6, 5.68 ERA), while the Cards look to Adam Wainwright (4-5, 5.19 ERA). Tickets are still available for tonight and Thursday night’s game…and the more blue the boys on the field see the better.

Following a couple notes, here are your lineups…

Roster Moves: Before the game, the Royals purchased the contract of infielder Fernando Cortez, who was hitting .299 (67-for-224) with 12 doubles, 1 triple, three homers and 19 RBI in 61 games with Triple-A Omaha this season. He’s had 33 strikeouts, but collected 20 walks and stolen nine bases in 10 attempts. He’s made starts at first, second, third, left field and center field this season and should provide Esteban with some extra help filling in on the infield. The move is in response to Grud suffering a minor setback with his knee – although not bad enough to D.L. him – in last night’s 8-1 win over the Redbirds. To make room for Cortez, Shane Costa has been optioned to Omaha. Costa hit .196 (9-for-46) with a triple and five RBI in 21 games for the Royals.

Down on the Farm: Ten Royals minor league players earned All-Star honors for their respective leagues with the Class A Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks having a league-high five players named to the Carolina League team. The 2006 Royals first-round selection Luke Hochevar, 2003 first-round selection Chris Lubanski and 2000 first-round pick Mike Stodolka will represent Double-A Wichita at the Texas League All-Star Game in Corpus Christi on June 26. For Wilmington, outfielder Jose Duarte, infielder Mario Lisson, left-hander Rowdy Hardy, and right-handers Julio Pimentel and Gilbert De La Vara were all named to the 2007 Carolina League All-Star team, which will travel west to face the California League All-Stars in Stockton, Calif., on June 19. Third baseman Michael Thompson and right-handed pitcher Tyler Chambliss will represent the Single-A Burlington Bees at the Midwest League All-Star Game at Kane County on June 19.
