This just in from the Media Relations department…

The Kansas Royals have recalled outfielder Joey Gathright from Triple-A Omaha and designated infielder Angel Berroa for assignment. Gathright will be in uniform for the Royals game tonight in Cleveland and will wear No. 2.

Gathright, 26, was hitting .328 (61-for-186) for Omaha with eight doubles, two triples, 20 RBI and 50 runs scored. He was carrying a .450 on-base pct. after drawing 37 walks against just 23 strikeouts and stole 21 bases in 26 attempts. He led the league in steals and ranked tied for second in both on-base pct. and walks. He was 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts since May 19 and hitting .374 (46-for-123) since April 26.

Berroa, 29, has appeared in just nine games since being recalled from Omaha on May 14. He is hitting .091 (1-for-11) with an RBI.

Now the question is: will Gathright’s bat stay hot?

This is the new best news of the day. The Royals started playing better last year about the time Gathright came over from TB, and Berroa added seemingly nothing to the team. I hope this means the Royals will start have longer at bats and see more pitches, because that was the way they succeeded offensively at the end of last year. It’s tough when every starting pitcher is going 8 innings against you, then it’s time for the closer.
