Lineups: Dotel back from D.L.

The Royals return home today after a 10-game road trip where we posted a 6-4 record. The team has won six of its last eight with the players finally finding their rhythm at the plate. Before getting to the lineups, here are some notes for you.

PITCHERS TAKE TO HITTING: According to Elias Sports Bureau, Joel Peralta’s first Major League plate appearance in Sunday’s 12-inning, 10-5 win at Colorado was one for the record books. Peralta, who picked up the win on the mound for KC, belted a two-run double that secured the lead for the Royals. Apparently, it’s been more than 34 years since the last time a player’s first Major League plate appearance came during extra innings and resulted in a run-producing, extra-base hit. The last time: April 10, 1973, when Houston’s Jim Crawford used a 12th-inning walk-off double to beat the Dodgers.

Also…after just three Interleague games, our pitchers are hitting a combined .429. Okay, that’s only in seven at-bats, but still, three hits including a double, two RBI and only one strikeout isn’t bad for these hurlers.

DOTEL RETURNS: The Royals reactivated pitcher Octavio Dotel from the D.L. today. Dotel, who has been out all season with a strained left oblique, is expected to “ease” back into the closer role, according to GM Dayton Moore. Whatever his role is, it will be nice to have him in the bullpen for the first time this season. In three rehab appearances with Double-A Wichita, Dotel posted a 0-1 record with a 3.00 ERA (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER), striking out four without issuing a walk. The hidden plus of his rehab appearances: he tossed in back-to-back games, didn’t allow a run in those two games and didn’t feel any pain. Welcome back, Octavio!

D.L. BOOSTED SHEALY: First baseman Ryan Shealy is batting .529 (9-for-17) with one double, one home run and six RBI since returning from the D.L. on May 16. And, the team is 4-1 in the five games he’s played in since returning.

BUDDY IS A-OK: Although he is limping around, Buddy Bell is back in the clubhouse a day after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Buddy had the minor surgery after feeling some increased pain during the Royals most recent road trip.

LaRUE REHABS WITH OMAHA: Catcher Jason LaRue, who has been out since May 11 with a left clavicle contusion, begins a rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Omaha.
